Linux - Manually Adding a Printer
Summary
Linux uses Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) as its native printing protocol.
If needed, you can access the CUPS admin portal via localhost:631 entered into a web browser.
Adding a printer

Show Applications > Printers >Additional Printer Settings

Add > Network Printer > Find Network Printer

Enter the printer's IP into the Host field > Find

- If possible, use the IPP configuration
- Example: ipp://<printer's ip address>:631/ipp

For Canons, you may need to use the JetDirect option
- Choose Driver > select printer from database

Here, you can choose Generic or try to find the closest approximation of the specific printer make/model.

- For Generic drivers, using PCL 6/PCL XL (or whatever is the most current PCL version) is recommended. PCL is the most commonly used driver. PostScript(PS) is the second most used generic driver, but PS is mainly used in conjunction with Adobe products when color quality and precision are important.
