Linux - Manually Adding a Printer
Summary Linux uses Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) as its native printing protocol. If needed, you can access the CUPS admin portal via localhost:631 entered into a web browser. Adding a printer Show Applications > Printers >Additional Printer Settings Add > Network Printer > Find Network Printer Enter the printer's IP into the Host field > Find List of PME Printers - https://uchicagopme.freshservice.com/support/solutions/articles/19000126001 If possible, use the IPP configuration Example: ipp://:631/ipp For Canons, you may need to use the JetDirect option Choose Driver > select printer from database Here, you can choose Generic or try to find the closest approximation of the specific printer make/model. For Generic drivers, using PCL 6/PCL XL (or whatever is the most current PCL version) is recommended. PCL is the most commonly used driver. PostScript(PS) is the second most used generic driver, but PS is mainly used in conjunction with Adobe products when color quality and precision are important. Choose desired name and click Apply

This can be found in the list of PME Printers link at the top of this article. In the Protocol box, choose HP Jetdirect – Socket if the model name of your printer begins with HP, otherwise choose IPP If you are having issues with an HP printer, try the LPD protocol instead Your device will automatically detect the location of the printer. Set the printer name to the same name as the location. Click on Use and change it to Generic PCL Printer Your final entry should look similar to this: Click add to complete the process
